Game slowing. Any Tips?
« on: June 27, 2007, 08:52:00 pm »

i have only made it to 70 dwarves until recently 110 is my new record.  I have noticed that the game keeps pausing between every few moves and the slowdown is very noticeable.

Does anyone else have this problem?

Any settings I can change to optimize performance?

Keep your onhand items to a minimum. Dont keep hundreds of doors/mechanisms/etc.
Try to send away as much of the siege junk with the human caravan. After a few sieges the piles are ungodly unless you've started the economy for smelting. Alternatively you can look at some of the trash compactor setups.

Past weather and temperature, it's pretty hard to improve your speed. It's almost totally reliant on processor power.

I started my game with 87 FPS. After half a year, nine dwarves, I'm at 47 FPS with a constant "skipping" feel to the movement, where  dwarves suddenly move the next space or two very quickly... then slow down.

But what do I know?
Everything I say should be taken with atleast 1 tsp. of salt, and another liter of Dwarven Wine is recommended.

Random animals wandering around your fort also slow things down, both your game speed and your dwarves movement. Cage everything but your dogs and wardogs. Better yet, just keep a few of each animal in cages and slaughter the newborns for food. Easy and effective way to increase speed.

Ok the temperature and weather did the trick.

I have a cage with about 80 puppies and even more wardogs runnin about.  I think im going to release the cage on the next demon attack.
