Platinum battle axe
« on: August 26, 2014, 08:36:57 am »

My moody dwarf is about to make a platinum battle axe (likes battle axes, grabbed platinum as first task item).

Would it be worth equipping?

In other words, would the artifact bonus, plus the increase in damage of the axe's two blunt attacks (pommel strike and flat slap), due to increased material density, make up for the decreased efficiency of it's single edge attack (hack)?

I would pause the game, forbid every metal bar except candy (or steel), let him grab that bar and watch him make that legendary battle axe.

Dwarfs will automatically claim adamantine as base material for smithing moods when you have any, so chances are pretty good there's none around.

Forbidding mood materials will only in very particular cases lead to replacements - basically only stuff that the dwarf is carrying and hasn't yet dropped in the workshop will reliably be replaced; no replacements ever happen if the dwarf has already started working on an artefact.

As far as i can tell, platinum as a cutting weapon material is slightly better than copper and significantly worse than bronze. It should be decent for combat against unarmoured opponents, but not too great against bronze- and iron-armoured goblins, although the heavier pommel strikes might compensate a bit. Like any other weapon, it can be installed in a weapon trap, providing ridiculous value benefits and admiration happiness.
