Mining Valuables Near Water
« on: May 07, 2008, 04:18:00 pm »

So I got lucky and started with a nice batch of already visible native aluminum and sunstone.  Problem is its part of the wall of the brook.  This leaves me a bit unsure as to how the heck im going to mine out those tiles and retrieve the goodies that drop.

Is it possible to divert the brook? Ive got a chasm, although its a bit in the wrong direction...

Also, is there a way to tell what diretion the water in the brook (or anything else  for that matter) is flowing?

If you turn the display from showing depth to showing the '~' tile in init.txt, you can tell which way the brook is flowing. And you can outright wall off the brook with a dam, or just redirect it if you so desire. Build a bridge of pumps across the brook, so they suck all the water out of the brook and move it one z-level higher; that'll "dry" the brook out long enough to install walls or floodgates.

Or, if your map freezes in the winter, you can just mine out those goodies then. No danger of drowning from ice, although you'll want to move fast so that no dwarves are suck down there when spring comes along.

Or just channel it out and build walls while it's frozen.

I've got a map with a brook and waterfall (a 35 level waterfall btw), if i built a tunnel from the brook to a chasm then will it just divert the brook? or will it just flow (3-4/7 waterlevel) in each direction? Does the tunnel have to be extra wide or deep?
Thanks. (map doesn't freeze over, its in a warm climate. Also haven't enough recources to pump yet)
