Catapults should be able to take ANYTHING from a stockpile
« on: August 24, 2014, 02:12:26 pm »

I think it would make for some funny hauling if you could load up the ol' catapult with anything in a stockpile set to give to it.  Wooden chairs, training axes, spiked steel balls, burning blocks of lignite in lead bins, trapped goblins and the occasional deconstructed dorfen prisoner would all make capital ammo.  (I suppose the less dense or more awkward objects might have extra inaccuracy built in, but I don't see that as a problem now)

If discipline is properly balanced for siege operators, the one other thing needed is the ability to designate a target for the catapult on the ground so you can try to land them some particular place.  (You might not badly need a z-level fix if you can use that to set the z-level you want)

With some catapults and operators of varying quality trying to shoot items into various stockpiles on the ground, I sense the stirrings of a brand new form of dorfen logic -- fuzzy logic, suitable for simulating neural nets.  You have a 45% chance of landing a table from one catapult and a 25% chance of landing a chain from another and if they both hit a dorf takes up a manager's traction bench job, triggering a pressure plate that releases the magma that prevents the dorfs from firing the catapult that...

Catapults as an expensive, pointless, overly complicated replacement for minecarts that furthermore requires years of training specialist dwarves for it to be even mildly effective? +1*999999999999 ]I NEED THIS

More importantly: reverse siege of Minas Tirith anyone? Chuck the severed heads of their comrades... at the siegers. With the new morale system and the designate target location system you proposed it would be a viable way of breaking an enemy siege.
