Need help, there's lava everywhere.

So the good news is that any hippies that come by my fort to tell me Im killing to many trees are killed by the erupting volcano. The bad news is I couldn't save my fort's anvil or blacksmith when it erupted but the magma is walled off from the fort.

With over 2000 food 1000 drink and 60 citizens or so (there's always migrants coming but they can't get in) It seems Im self sustaining.

I really want that <Steel Anvil> but it's behind an Obsidian door and an adamantine wall, what should I do?

Im confused.  Please explain slowly.

- "erupted"?  Like with a pick in the side of it?

- Whats the problem?  the migrant cant get in?

- Your stuff is trapped and in danger of melting?

To prevent sudden death I had my miner run outside and put a single hole in the side of the volcano (for redirection); at the same time I had my metalsmith erect an adamantine wall to save the fort. My only anvil has been trapped inside that little room for about 2 years now. The lava rose to about Z + 17 or 18 inside the caldera and Z + 4 or 5 in the forest.

I think Im gonna plug that hole because that was hilariously scary

Hunh.

I guess you could drain it at an even lower point to retrieve the anvil.  Is it still there?  If the workshop deconstructed its gone man.  No free items, no matter what they are made of, can survive immersion in magma.  Anyhow, once the magma stops flowing it will slowly refill and if you plug the drain-hole you made it will return to normal.  Hopefully you will have fixed your problem with your plumbing by then :P

Other than that I could suggest trying to pump the magma to the other side of the mountain.

Nope. Most magma-safe objects can be submerged in magma without harm. Even magma-unsafe objects can be submerged in magma for a brief time (albeit with some damage). The stocks screen (or the loo[k] command) will tell you if the anvil is still in existence.

Magma-safe objects will be removed from the game if they fall onto a magma-occupied magma flow tile, however.

If you can get above the anvil, you can dump water onto it and the surrounding tiles to cast obsidian, then dig down to retrieve the anvil.

I believe Toady mentioned in the changelog that he fixed the bug where submerged items spontaneously vanish. I know my goblin incinerators always have iron equipment lying around after the magma is drained.

For retrieving the anvil you don't need to obsidian-cast the whole volcano, just plug the breach and drain the magma remaining in the room.

If you dig a drain(s) underneath the forest you can drain the magma off the map into the map edge underground like people do with water using a fortification on the edge tile.

It should be possible to build enough drains outpace the flooding rate, that is assuming you have enough picks(when you do an upramp into the surface to connect the prebuilt drain to the magma pool, your miner is almost certain to die)

Then again sometimes a fortress is just doomed :) I have fond memories of that happening when I messed up my little farming room back in 2D :)).

If you're feeling cheesy, you could turn off temperature in the init, and see if you can get a dwarf to plug the hole, once it's drained enough for the floor next to it to be pathable.
Then, either use a dwarfwash to remove the magma coverings from your dwarf, or be prepared to have it spontaneously combust when you turn temperature back on.

I like this, it feels very Armok like  8), perhaps this is a good way to get the dwarf to open multiple 'drains' before eventually paying his simutational 'penance' in magma the very blood of our god himself  :).

That thread says that glass items specifically will disappear, although I wasn't able to find an open bug report on the issue. Nether-cap wood is also known to be problematic, and magma-safe organics like dragon bone and demon silk may have problems as well. But magma-safe metals and stones should not just disappear (unless they fall to the bottom of the magma sea). I have, in fact, seen a gabbro boulder sitting in magma for 40+ in-game years in v0.34.11.

There's a bug fixed in 40.09 that caused stuff to disappear:

The workshops are both still there, I gave up on it for now and left it inhabited to play a glacier map.

Woah its 40.x.

So you can just build a spare anvil at your new place and use an adventurer to transport it back to your old fort. You can even make a secret drawbridge entrance with a level so he can get in. :)
