Some areas clean, others I don't care about.

Oy fellow Dwarfs!

I just started playing DF the other day and I find it very exciting, I just have one really big problem right now that I can't google a solution for.

Problem: Move crap from some areas after digging/mining while leaving them in others.

My fort in basically 3 parts. First is above ground (we call this above), all that sun, trading posts, animals and such. Second is below ground and is the living and working area (we call this below). The third is deep down where I mine for ores and gems (we call this deep). When I dig rooms 'above' and 'below' to make rooms and hallways I don't want stones lying around after I am done so I have made storage areas where they move basically everything that is not of value like stone, wood and other things like that. But when I go 'deep', where I just mine for ores and things of value, I don't want them to go down there and start carrying up all the crap I don't want. I care if there are building materials all over my sleeping area, I don't care if they are down in the mines. If I sometime need stone I don't mind that they go to the mines to get this.

Is there some way fix this or am I doomed to have halls bigger than the rest of my fort for storing more stone than I could use on a castle?

Many thanks for the answers!

Problem: Move crap from some areas after digging/mining while leaving them in others.

There are two solutions:
  • Manually mark all the things you want to move for Dumping. Set up a garbage dump (zone) where you want the items to go. Wait for all dumping to be performed. Remove the garbage zone. Reclaim the items.
  • Draw a stockpile underneath the items you want to move. Draw another stockpile where you want them to go. Configure the first stockpile to give to the second. Configure the second stockpile to take from links only. Optional: assign wheelbarrows to the second stockpile.

You could keep the stockpiles as is for your upper levels, and just mass forbid everything once in awhile for the stuff down below.

I tend to use up a lot of stone fast early on, for furniture/crafts/pots/blocks for building.  Maybe instead of seeing stone as a problem, you can see it as a possibility!  Make a few more mason and craftdwarf workshops, and start cranking out needful things.  Once the demand for stone goes up, everything will get cleaned up nice and fast.

Oh my that sounds like the kind of hauling I did for my first couple of forts, stone mass selected from the stocks screen... whole fort in lockdown while everyone had twenty jobs waiting. :D

You need to find the d-b-d designations, thats the "manually" greycat talks about, not k over every single stone in a bedroom.

Wow thanks for the fast responses!

greycat/Raftio:
The d-b-d seems like the thing I am looking for, with temporary dump sites. I might have to learn to use the stockpile give/take deal later on when I need materials transfered but right now I just want a clean fort ;) But when I put it in the Dump it stacks, which is doesnt in a Stockpile. Will that become a problem or is it a win-win?

rjs:
Yes, I bet I will start using it soon but until then I don't want it everywhere. I didnt really understand your first suggestion but I think I have a solution good enough :)

If you dump items they stack, this does not have any negative consequences. Making use of this is often referred to as a 'quantum stockpile' and can be considered a sort of exploit/bug. I usually use it for stone where I want to get it out of the way but not for other items.
