Unable to shoot/kill flying birds.
« on: August 21, 2014, 08:34:22 pm »

Hey guys & girls,

So I know in the next version this will be fixed:
"Allowed flying/climbing wilderness critters to work their way off the map"

But meanwhile, is there a way to kill the crows, birds, etc flying around the map? the always seem to stay above sky layer 20 and my dwards are unable to shoot them down(invalid target apparently? probably too far away?).
Anyone has any ideas of fixed on how to kill these birds?

I usually station my marksdwarves under them (no real need to use marksdwarves since they rarely shoot as you observed), that gets most birds moving and after a couple of stations off the map or to the ground to be killed. Tendious and slow, but still better than the stuck giant toad in the caverns, anyone got a diver squad I could borrow?

You can edit the raws in the save game and remove the [FLIER] tags. When you reload, they'll fall to their death.

This is what I do. Fliers will have to walk in my map. If I don't do this, then I won't get any invaders at all, so you don't really have a choice there, unless you like the quietness.
Use Notepad++ (totally free), open all the raws in your save folder (!!!), CTRL+H and replace [FLIER] from all opened documents. Save and exit and start your game.

You could just build a staircase up to them. Might make for a good way to drop invaders when they climb up them then dodge something later, too.

You can also use DFHack to kill them with the "exterminate" command.

Unfortunately  DFHack isn't out for 40.09 yet.

I removed the [FLIER] tag from the bird(s) who are on my map and I also tried to make their fly speed as slow as their walking speed.
However they still just happily fly off/away from my dwarfs. What am I doing wrong? :s

To get rid of them build a platform up to 10z away from them and station at the top.

Found what I was doing wrong, also instead of just removing the [FLIER] tag, this always works miracles:
[SELECT_MATERIAL:ALL]
     [BOILING_POINT:0]
     [STATE_COLOR:ALL:PINK]
     [STATE_NAME_ADJ:GAS:poof!]
