Containing a werebeast outbreak?
« on: September 05, 2014, 01:55:03 pm »

So, in my magnificent fortress of Syrupplaited I had a caravan arrive and a damn trader transformed to a werelizard. And consequently I've just had two of my dwarfs turn and attack my farmers, which is not good. I have about 7 or so farmers doing nothing but that, and running three crops is not easy let alone when they start dying. So how can I tell if someone has been infected and while I havea  plan to contain it, I need to know what to look for.

I intend to draft all infected into a squad and station them inside a room and lock them in, will this work?

It will work. Look in the combat records for anyone bitten by the werebeasts. If they were bitten by a werebeast in their bestial form, they're also a were-beast.

I've had dwarves get bitten and not get infected, so if you lock them all in the same room, the non-infected will probably get killed by the infected.

Go through the combat logs (I hope you still have them) and find out exactly who got bit by a were. Those are the ones you need to watch. Build separate rooms for each of them and lock them each in their own room, and wait for the next full moon. See http://dwarffortresswiki.org/index.php/v0.34:Werebeast#Transformation_Dates for the dates.

As long as you lock them in with a wall or bridge. IIRC werebeasts are building destroyers.

Hmmm, so slight problem. Looking at the combat logs using r i find the werelizards that were attacking everyone however, i only see the title of the ones they weere fighting. such as farmer or trader no names listed when i view the log.

If you just look at the log of the were it won't tell you the names of who he bit. But if you look at the other logs, the logs of your dwarves, they are listed by name.

Yeah, I just noticed.

Update:

I went from 83 dwarves down to 56 in a matter of a month or so because of the werebeasts attack(s). half my fort is red in anger and the other half is spread out from content to ecstatic. So we will see if I can survive the ensuing tantrum spiral going starting up.

With any luck the next full moon will come around while the spiral is in full swing, just to make it more interesting than a "normal" tantrum spiral.  :D

It's like a traditional zombie flick: if bitten, there's no choice but to kill them.

Alas, the up and coming Syrupplaited has fallen victim the the spiral, I walled off the entrance to our lower levels and activated the bridge the seals the entrance. All the remaining eleven shall drown as I activated the floodgate to our water intake system for the wells. which is a few z layers above our other levels (the river I mean) so now they will drown...putting a fitting end to the dwarves of syrupplaited...

May the rest ......

On a side note, I idd have another transform and go on a rampage killing more. Also my legendary miner who came with me at embark did get entombed and walled in to her royal mausoleum now she rests with several marble statues and a nice marble coffin.

This is actually how my first fortress fell. Although, they were Wereelephants (oh god) and there was an additional helping of loyalty cascade.

What I would do to survive this (pointless response as you already experienced FUN) would be to dig out a pocket fort for survivors of the beasts and lock them in there.

I would send out the infected first siege I got.  Fight and die.
