Question about falling items being damaged.
« on: August 19, 2014, 10:28:34 am »

So I made a mine cart track that was successfully able to go from where my hematite ore mine is to where my magma smelters and forges are and I started thinking about how to most optimally set up one of these systems for future forts.  I came to reason that I only really need to get the ore down to the smelters I have no problems carrying my armor and weapons up and I bet most people just push empty carts back up to the mines anyway.

So the idea is that I will have a much shorter mine cart track that is completely on the level of the mine itself and ends with the ore being dumped into a hole that goes straight down to my magma smelters, in a self contained room probably with some safety mechanisms to prevent death from above.

So the question is : Are items destroyed by falling significant distances?  Specifically ore and charcoal bars (or if charcoal doesn't survive possibly wood).

I went to the wiki and the 'gravity' page only talks about living things being injured.  Perhaps they could answer this question there as well.

Let them plunge away!

Build a giant shaft all the way down to your smelters, build a hatch at z+1, link it to a lever, and put a stockpile with all the apprpriate things enabled just underneath it.

Periodically tweak the lever-> profit.

Good, that will be at least an order of magnitude less work than the mine track!

Just watch out for dwarves being crushed beneath piles of stone falling 100 stories... Or getting their skull caved in by a dress falling 1 level.

P.S. If you don't get this note, let me know and I'll write you another.
It's amazing how dwarves can make a stack of bones completely waterproof and magmaproof.
It's amazing how they can make an entire floodgate out of the bones of 2 cats.
