Bring back climbing dwarves?
« on: August 14, 2014, 11:52:39 am »

TL;DR: Dwarves stopped climbing vertically at all, even when they should.

Okay, I remember the early days, when climbing mostly meant random deaths everywhere...
But now dwarves doesn't seem to climb at all when stuck.

I had a 3 tiles wide, 2z level high underground water duct, and a well above the end, and my miner got stuck in it. My abort system brought the water to the first z-level being flooded, with the second one clear.
The dwarf climbed on the walls above the water, assassin/tomb raider style, until the end, wich was like this:
Code: [Select]
WWWWW
WFFFFFW
WF~~FW
WF~~FW
WW~~WW

W:Walls, F floors, and ~ water.

Above it was like this:
Code: [Select]
WWWWW
W.FFFF
W..oFF
W...FF
WWWWWW

o well, and . empty space

There was only one or two zlevel between both, so the dwarf could perfectly have climbed up.

But he didn't.
I'm not sure if it's a bug (after all he climbed horizontally perfectly well) or a feature (Toady have "fixed" the problem of dwarf climbing everywhere.)

Beside, I actually liked dwarves trying to take "shortcuts" instead of getting around the whole mountain, and some times failing.
Maybe that could be linked to the "seeking thrills" and/or "not hesitating to think outside the box", traditions, caring about what other thinks traits?
But that's a whole other thing.
