Upgrade from barony to duchy - why skipping county?

(that's still in v.0.40.06)
After the liaison went away, my barony was upgraded from barony to duchy, and my two baronesses became duchesses. This caused an unwelcome jump in the requirements. Why was the count level skipped?

The liaison brought news about massive conquering by the goblin civilization (15 sites and 32 groups of refugees) and I'm surprised my civilization still exists with all its nobles intact. Maybe the government just wants to move capital to my place as quickly as possible and tries to encourage me to send some offerings?

Nobles always ask for a nice tomb. See that they make good use of it.

This happens because you break the wealth requirements for a duchy when the outpost liason meets with you to upgrade you to a barony.

This will usually happen if you embark with a specialist that grinds out high wealth items like ☼Quarry bush roasts☼ or ☼Spiked willow ball☼.

That or all the dukes were slaughtered by the invasions so the game just promoted your noble to his new place in the hierarchy.

Maybe less of a slaughtering of the nobility but perhaps a darf was related to a duke and that said duke died and related dwarf became a duke and promoted anyone available to a duke level noble.

The two baronesses promoted were already in place. One (of starting seven) was promoted to barony by a liaison long ago, the other one was indeed promoted by death of her mother to the same title, but now it was because of "You continue to impress! I have come empowered to elevate this land in the eyes of our realm.". Despite slight changes my civ still has 30 nobles, and most of them are the same as in the beginning, I document the changes with screenshot every year.

It may be true about high wealth. My city is a metropolis, and since one of the baronesses banned export of statues I was forced to make more food for trade... Plus I have almost-ready over 100 level magma pump stack, and my glassmakers are masters. This could have raised the value of the city unintentionally. Still I expected to become a county first.

Well, one more stupid ban and I will make use of that tomb I have to make.

Oh that will whack your created wealth.  100z of magma-safe pumps?  full of iron corkscrews right?  We all love selling trap components, even now they got nerfed.  Despite sucking for that purpose, a corkscrew is a trap comp and prices like it.  Even if you are running green glass (you might be with those masters) its still a decent chunk of dorfbucks in (i think) architecture.  Remember glass is a gem.  You got some screenshots that might let you see how your wealth has changed?  If it's spiked I'd guess you see some there.


My power wheels and drivetrain alone kicked me for almost 10k, watch those masterwork mechanisms XD
 mine were marble to be magma-safe which didnt help (the axles are nethercap), the engineering deck and crawlspaces are usually flooded with magma since they breached the integrity of some of my defenses

My previous fort (started in 40.04, upgraded to 40.05) skipped from baron (appointed by me + liaison) to duke as well, no count either.
I indeed suspect my magma pumps. Plus those masterwork large serrated steel discs I put in traps at the entrance.
I guess the wealth jump is large enough to just skip the count noble.

Perhaps some adjustments are in order, making a slightly larger gap between the different noble requirements.

Heh, I don't have iron yet, apart from some early goblinite and caravan imports, but yes, the pumps are from glass and could be responsible for growing wealth. I have two screenshots, one over year before:

The most expensive items I have made are 5 platinum statues I think. However, they are not installed yet (I might have to do that for newly elevated nobles) and they are only a small part of total wealth. Also the last caravan brought me some steel trap items, more expensive than the statues, but they were not available the moment liaison started meeting. I deliberately chose not to make platinum items and similar.

Said that, I used the current caravan to split 7 stacks of steel coins into 3500 single coins. But they are forbidden for now. When I melt them my fort will be rich and will attract more beasts. But it will take ten years to do so :)

What breached the defences?

I used gabbro for blocks and magma safe mechanisms - because it is cheap. But it didn't prevent wealth increase.

I tried to prevent that, no steel, no iron, no traps, no statues, no decorations, no engraving or smoothing... But I think the requirements for noble positions are to small or too close each to another. In that one year between liaison visits it's easy to jump over these limits.

Ahh in my case I decided to build a pumpstack very late, and had already diverted the river for another project.  So I was forced to thread the drivetrain (axles and gears) in some creative ways and it was exposed to various chambers it ran through, not much point in trap-corridors and drawbridges if they come in down the axle tunnels, so they are filled with 7/7 magma to deny access in the areas they are exposed.  It's drainable if I need to send a mechanic, otherwise the whole system runs in the magma for safety.

Your plat statues wont be counting, this is true.  The steel trap comps will definately be thousands a piece.

Even though you bought the steel trap comps and they are (imported), I'm pretty sure the discs will become created wealth once built into a trap (though should retain their imported status if you dismantle). 

Coins?  Forbidden coins dont count?  Do no forbidden items end up in the wealth calcs?

I have forgotten about artefacts, I'm always forgetting them (maybe and adventurer will find use for those). But most of them are not installed, only two doors remain as last line of defence. However, only one or two were created in that last year.

I don't remember if trap components can be encrusted, because if they can, I also mass-decorate items with gems and animal parts... But that too was started recently, after elevation of nobles.

I have forbidden them only to prevent melting, since I don't have magma smelters yet. They definitely count in total wealth, but I don't think they are important because of their relatively low value. Stack of 500 steel coins is worth 300 dorfbucks, while split stack costs 500 dorfbucks.

Magma is safe as houses.  Or maybe i'm mixing up my homilies....  Magma gets along like a house on fire.  Yeah, there it is.

My site can become the capital any moment now, too. Problem is I have to deal with two nobles now and expect to deal with another one soon. Nobles without requirements fulfilled apparently make more mandates, at least that's my experience here. I mostly care about export ban. Every duke has three export bans now. I can practically export only food and glass traps. Sanctions are bad for economy, but my nobles are too stupid to see that. (I don't have justice system, but one of the dukes is important for several task, and the other has an interesting story I want to explore in adventure or legend mode, so I won't ignore the bans - for now).


But how to protect the axles from magma? And somehow I don't really believe that filling everything with magma is a "safe" thing to do ;)

That's clear now. And cool ;) Personally I'm not a fan of blue objects, but these magic mushrooms can have their uses. Red is good.
