vampire squad not learning anything?
« on: August 07, 2014, 03:57:16 am »

I found 3 vampires in my fort. They've been locked away in a room with equipment and armor training for a long time. Kind of a last ditch safety squad. I expected them to be legendary before long. Despite having an axe equipped, I just checked the squad leader he has 3 xp in axe.

It's been 4 years??

other squads which are out and about gain huge XP doing individual combat drills.

The vampires are doing the same, but seemingly gaining no skill at all.
Even one who was a levle 8 macedwarf was given a mace and he has gained no skill in that either.

armor and shield are also not improving nor are things like fighting, etc.

They are scheduled and set up exactly like every other squad, just behind several locked doors.

Have you tried danger room training? Whatever you think of them, that could verify whether they are capable of gaining exp.

In previous versions vampires got a huge bonus to attributes upon being vampirified, however after that they could never ever gain attribute increases.
It was generally suggested to max out your dwarfs attributes before turning them into vampires.
I could imagine that (in this version or earlier ones) vampires can't gain skills either. With the argument them being static in their unlife.

I didn't turn them into vampires, they were immigrants, and in previous versions of the game (.34) I seem to recall training vampires on squads and there being no issue with them gaining combat skill.

and I'm not talking about attributes. I'm talking about weapon skills.

Macedwarf, armor user, etc.

I have no danger room, I can try setting one up though. It's pretty obvious they're not behaving like every other squad though. They are training, just getting nothing.

The arena shows no problems with vampires gaining skills, look at their traits if they don't like fighting or something like that it may provide some insight.

It is likely that the first step of their training was to path somewhere, and they couldn't, so they just stood around with "individual training" job but not actually training. Unfortunately there is no way to know where they wanted to go, IF that is indeed what was happening.

Vampires gain attributes as well - strength, agility, spatial/kinesthetic sense etc. are typical for combat. Seen in .34, and it's the same with arena vampires in .40.03.
Chances are good it's not a vampire problem but some other training bug.

I have a vampire who has gone up in skills since she arrived. Granted it was in actual combat against live goblins, but it is possible under some conditions at least.

That's the problem. if I let them out, they'll feed, immediately.

When they were first locked up, one was a mayor. I had to let him out to conduct the meeting (they don't get elected these days). Instead of going to the meeting he blew past the liaison and went and killed two dwarves as fast as he could.

I've put an equipment room next to their barracks. Airlock, dwarves can drop off equipment parts.

When I unlock it, they go in, put on some equipment, and then go back to their barracks. if they want to go somewhere else, I don't know where it could be. They have no needs except feeding.

Maybe they are trying to grab equipment not in there? I'll try moving all the equipment in there and see if it helps at all.

From my experience: Dwarves in 40.06 (didn't played .07 yet) didn't used their weapons.
Mine were legendary everything (including discipline, teacher, learner and organizer) in 2 years, legendary wrestler, dodger, kicker, fighter, unbelievably strong and basically unbreakable... but barely competent in weapon/axe skill.

From someone else: Dwarves seem to train better in larges rooms. Maybe your airlock is too small.

Also, did you took care of setting minimum to train to [number of dwarves in squad] in the training schedule? They will not begin training until the quorum (10 by default) is reached, only doing individual drill, wich are nowhere as efficient.

They don't use their weapons for sparring, they use in them in individual combat drills. My other dwarves are near legendary in their weapons with the exact same identical set up, and that's not actually true. All the squads are currently set to 10 (I thought it would prevent sparring) and they spar all the time. So most dwarves are legendary wrestlers and legendary in their weapon.

However the vampires have gained nothing (except that initial 3 xp in axe)

Perhaps they are faking the training, and are in fact just waiting for a path to complete their suck on dwarf blood jobs. Throw in some beds with toddlers.

Perhaps the THRIST is so overpowering they are unable to gain skill points?

I noticed recently their job is listed as "individual training/rest"
what's that mean?

I've seen that.  I'm not quite sure what it means, but I have seen it sometimes on dwarves who are drenched in sweat, or who have recently (or will shortly in the future) give a "collapses from exhaustion" message in the log.

So, my best guess is that it means the dwarf is momentarily resting, in the middle of a training session, and will return to training after she gets her wind back.
