How soon until I have and Elf War?

Here's the situation. I have a moat around my fortress. However, elf merchants can't seem to use the bridge I built across the moat, and instead choose to run into the nearby river into their demise.
My question is "how soon will it be until these suicidal merchants cause a war?"

Potentially never. In 34.11, I had two elf caravans get incinerated upon entering the map by a forgotten beast in a row, and when I finally killed it the third caravan never batted an eye.

there's no elf diplomacy in 34.x you won't be able to be at war with elves unless they are still with at war with the dwarf civ you make your fort from at the end of world genning.

the elf diplomacy has been re-enabled in DF2014 though so you should be able to piss off elves and get them to war with you.

In my current fort I had a human merchant and his guards climb up random trees because they tried to fight giant langurs. In regular dwarven fashion, I eventually sent my woodcutter to "help" them down gently.
The fall killed the merchant, which I took down first, but his guards survived and left the map calmly while still being reported "Friendly" in the unit list. So I guess you don't have to worry too much.

You'll need to wait until 0.40.07 to do it, though, since some of the other changes to 0.40 in general caused the original Elf Diplomat fix to stop working (in particular, changing Baron/Count/Duke from site-level positions to civ-level positions caused first contact to no longer happen).

Gotcha, so wait until an update before any potential woodland hippie fun?
