My Fortress has an Evil Overlord...
« on: August 06, 2014, 10:55:16 am »

And its not me. Well, not JUST me. Game is vanilla 40.06, no mods whatsoever.

Lancedclashes was founded in the year 1050 among dense trees, upon ground rich in hematite and marble, and (fortuitously as I did not know this on embark) a magma tube stretching all the way up into the top cave layer at z-level 86. All in all a really prime spot to set up shop and run a looong fortress to test the new version. I dug down to the magma, secured a section of the cave for agriculture, and even began a program to attempt to domesticate the giant moles that kept wandering into my cage traps.

Then, in the 5th migrant wave, SHE arrived. A dwarf by the name of Waywardgranite, without friends of family and nothing more than the clothing on her back. Oh, and the following skills at Great: Armorsmith, Weaponsmith, Metalcrafter, Dodger, Shield User, Armor user, Discipline, Observer, and perhaps most oddly lasher.

All her major social skills were at expert too, but she didn't seem like the most social of creatures with poor empathy, poor focus, little patience, little ability with language, and a demeanor that could be considered rude.

To say that my suspicions were aroused would be an understatement. I began preparing an... apparatus to ensure that if my worst fears came true the problem could be dealt with expeditiously but in the meantime I figured I might as well get some use out of her. I drafted her to lead my first squad of mele dwarves despite the fact that apparently she has great difficulty mastering her fear when confronted with danger. Without any whips on hand she was forced to take up a spear but she started leading training sessions ably enough.

My jewlcrafter woke up one day feeling faint and pale, which was unusual for a hearty soul such as himself, but life went on as normal for a couple more months.

Then the goblins came. Taking up her spear, though she was only a dabbler in its use, Waywardgranite lead the charge toward the invaders. Dodging or deflecting a half dozen arrows on her way she ran up to an archer and caved in his head with her shield. Next she proceeded to stab a goblin swordsman in the face so hard she split his head in half, turn to the maceman next to him and crush his hand to pulp with a single punch, and finish him off with another head-splitting stab. Two more goblins fell to the other nine members of her squad and the rest decided to retreat but apparently Waywardgranite had been excited to some kind of frenzy by this point; as the goblins fled for the edge of the map she ran down a bowman, bit his foot, and proceeded to chew it off as he flailed at her with his copper bow. Before crushing both his hands and then his skull with the shaft of her spear.

Oh, and that not mastering fear thing? Apparently she can master it enough that she doesn't stop horrifically murdering everything near her as fast as she possibly can. I mean I guess she was busy being horrified at what she did to the first goblin as she did something even worse to the second and by the fifth she was using her teeth for Armok's sakes.

As cleanup from the siege progressed one of my miners turned up dead and drained of blood and she was named the only suspect by three witnesses. It was time to rid the fortress this menace.

And then she was elected Mayor.

Who am I to interfere with democracy? When the time comes she shall be the noble of my fortress and lead it into a bright new future! My dwarves have chosen to the sheep and she the Shepard; glory to Lancedclashes! Now the bodies are piling up but the dining room is nice so nobody cares! God I love DF.

This game is on hold until after the invader bug is fixed, but expect updated on the exploits of Waywardgranite if the save remains compatible. I am absolutely looking for suggestions on where to go with thing long term, as basic security is dealt with.

Normally, I would say glass box the vampiric monster. But in this case, keep her alive until you get to being the capital and then kill off all of the nobles in line for king/queen until she somehow gets the position. Give her a whip, and make sure that she's well fed.

Accidentally made over 5000 copper maces once. I have no idea how that happened.

Treat this woman as a god. A dark palace of her own with a series of nearby cells to keep sacrificial prisoners, preferably somewhere you can route invaders through.

Last time I had a useful vampire was on Masterwork before the update, but I remember being able to keep him reasonably happy by making him a burrow that extended over his property and no further, then designating a few chains in his dining room to be used for "justice" and convicting people based on how much I wanted them to disappear rather than whether they actually did anything. (Apparently evidence isn't necessary to convict somebody, all you need is a name for the books.)

It eventually got to the point that people were getting sent to the chains as punishment for the murders of the last people to get sent to the chains- also, everyone was really happy, due to my extreme prejudice against tradition-hating dwarves and consequent elimination of dwarves that wouldn't benefit from getting comforted by a "Pillar of Society".

Just find a way to feed her potash makers and fisherdwarves instead of axelords and legendary engravers.

Vamps make really spectacular warriors, so sometimes it's well worth sacrificing a few peons to the vampire overlords.

This happened to me too, lasher and everything. I was playing as fire imps in v0.34. The lasher probably should have clued me in right away, but the fact that he used to be a lasher definitely did. He ended up being the last survivor of the fort, burying the bodies before abandoning.

Chain her as a prisoner in the hallway and set up beds next to her. People will sleep in the beds, providing her with regular meals. But if you do that, you won't be able to use he skills as a warrior.
