How do I escape the dwarf fortress?

I like being a dwarf and not a stupid human or elf, but I have no idea how to get out of the fortress and into the world after an hour. Am I missing something?

Nope. The non-player forts are always terribly designed without much indication of the exit's location. You have little to no hope of getting out of there, barring some incredible luck.

After DFHack is updated for the latest release, you could always use reveal command to see whole fortress and find the entrances.

real problem is that it's dark in a fortress where you supposedly became a fortress guard, meaning you've been there for a while. any dwarf worth his salt will know a fortress inside and out within a year. darkness should be reserved for places that are dark and you don't know inside and out; so, the underground, tombs, etc.

You can fast travel out of the fortress. Press the "m" key until it shows important structures. Move around until you find "fortress entrance".  Ascend using "<" or ">". However, if it bothers you that much, you can just start in a hillock y'know.

Sure, fortress interiors are confusing! But in case the OP's problem was just a matter of not knowing what to look for ...

You are looking for a deep hollow shaft, usually 3x3, with ramps spiraling around the perimeter. Go all the way up (could be 100 levels or more, but typically 20-40) and you'll arrive in the market building, which lets you out on the surface. You can also trade in the depot there. You may also find an underground tunnel that leads away to the deep sites -- looks like an underground road and the vertical shaft will pass right through it if one is present. Far easier than finding a cave if you want to explore the caverns.

Some handy tips here, especially after finding my way out of four or five forts at a very low fps :> Been turning my population cap after worldgen down to 200 to alleviate some lag..

The trick I use is to use the Q map to find your way to the edge of the mountain range. Move as close as you can to the edge until you find the exit.
