That could be several things. Might be an issue back home that killed the nobles, but you'd likely see some of your own people inherit titles if that were the case. More likely there was an ambush on the way in and the Liaison bit the dust.

reading on the forums and in my experience, it seems likely that you embarked as part of a dead civilisation (no living dwarfs)

i have gotten it every time since 40.01, because i play with unusually hostile worlds, and my civilisations usually die between 30 and 80 years in to world gen)

With a dead civilisation he wouldnt even get a caravan.

I guess that the Liason got killed underway.

With a dead civilisation he wouldnt even get a caravan.

That was true in 0.34 but seems to have changed in 0.40.

I had the exact same thing right now (in .40.03) - no sites shown for the dwarven civ upon embark, "this civilisation has no important leaders" as info, but i could  embark, the autumn caravan showed up with a "no liaison? Curious" message and my chief medical dwarf decided to become queen when the new year arrived.

Has someone already worked out what happens when you lose your monarch? Since this seems to be post-worldgen royal succession, it should keep going once you reactivated the civ, i.e. you probably should get a new monarch the following first of Granite.

I checked the "c"ivs and ideed it says no important leaders... interestingly I already got a kobold thief and they don't show up a civ...

40.05
still have this
according to the C my queen is a goblin fishery worker.

but it is a dwarf civilization. I think they recently had trouble as last year only 2 names..
this year no liaison again but now 5 or 6 names in the C list on them.

I've had this happen, but the next year a liaison turned up as usual.

I had this happen, and I'm certain my civ wasn't dead. I assumed it was because I embarked on an isolated little island. I abandoned before the next year so I don't know what would have happened with subsequent caravans.
