I've heard of several people checking fortress mode while running legends at the same time. I've never found a good way to do this personally. Is it best to have two copies of dwarf fortress running for this? Do you make a duplicate save? Export map data? Third-party program? I love playing DF but I'd love to have background to the story/journals I type as I play.

Also, my apologies if this has already been solved, but Google searches and forum searches have not turned up anything for me.

I make a copy of the region folder and use two instances of df at the same time, one for fortress and the other for legends, yes. Exporting the legends xml/map data and opening on a 3rd party program may work without needing to duplicate the region, but I never really bothered trying one of those.
