obsidian weaponry in the form swort swords/spear should be accessible to subterranean and above ground animal races to make them more of a threat to crude enough to be simplistic enough for them to make flavor wise and strong enough to be a threat to unarmored dwarfs (obsidian weaponry can't defeat even low grade copper armor) to make them more serious.

I like this idea. Underground animal people in particular could really use some work, since despite supposedly being able to ambush your fort (which they don't), all they do is lounge around their little camp.

I'm not entirely sure, but this may be possible to do in the current version with a bit of modding.

I understand that it is disappointing when a dwarf makes a spiked loincloth instead of an axe.

I think flint (or chert) weapons should also be used this way, cause historically they were more common than obsidian.

Maybe make it so they have their own little workshops/houses, and can slowly breed. That way, they send some of their soldiers, and keep some back, so they can repeatedly attack you. Make their breed time considerably shorter to, like maybe two seasons for on to grow into an adult.

I just think it'd be cool.

The concept of small-scale enemies attacking more than once by year is interesting, but what would be their motives to attack us - encroaching on their turf, need of living space, to plunder our food, clothes and other wealth?

Yeah, sounds good. They would probably attack for trinkets and food. Though it would be cool maybe to supply them goods, and make an alliance, so you might have some animal people fighting for you during a siege.

This could get swept up in the diplomacy re-write.  It'd be great to be able to negotiate with groups and even independent historical figures.

Of course, it can go both ways.
