Not sure if I'm right here but after some testing it seems that if you place a military training area near where civillian dwarves are working, the civillians start getting some combat skills, mostly just discipline though.  I think this seems pretty cool.

That's pretty interesting.  Is it possibly from witnessing fighting (sparring)?  We need to get a clear list of things that cause dwarves to learn discipline skill.

In my fortress, dwarves who were training gained levels of discipline.  This, in my mind, makes perfect sense, you spar and practice and are shown by your squad leader how to stand firm in the face of danger or fear, etc.

What needs tested is
a) if squad leaders with higher discipline raise other dwarves discipline faster,
b) if, like some have suggested, civilians nearby gain discipline from watching military spar, and
c) if there is a minimum level of discipline needed to not crap yourself at various threats.  Something like "level 3 or higher discipline means unaffected by corpses, level 5 or high unaffected by goblins, level 8...." and so on.

PS: Seriously, you must have, like, super-getting-lost skills. You could go missing in a straight corridor and impale yourself on flat ground if I don't tell you where to go.

At the very least dwarves with competent discipline won't run away, I've fought off one siege so far (Well I say I did, my military killed one goblin the human caravan guards killed the rest).  Another weird thing is the humans stopped trading after this but left their stuff on the trade depot and wouldn't leave.  To counter this I dismantled the trade depot and built another.  A dwarf caravan arrived and then dropped all their stuff where the old trade depot used to be, so now I have 2 trade caravan's worth of goods for free :D .
