Surviving a "fun" invasion <spoiler>
« on: July 31, 2014, 08:16:47 am »

I've had lots of fun, too much fun. Dwarfs geared in adamantine, along with their respective weapons keeps running away like goblins from the dam demon invasion. I've set up ballista with a "competent" operator. My Mayor is a has a Proficient rank in it and I swear this arrow flies sideways and hits everything but the demons.
How can I get my dwarfs to not freak out and fight properly? I've made shields but no one's using em and its listed under the uniform. Use > Aadamantine Shield. I made exactly 20 quivers (10 per 2 squads) and half of them uses it.
My mighty AxeLord falls, panic ensunes.

Here's my suposed battle plan gone terrible wrong.
*edit
Forgot to mentions on the previous floor I had a narrow 3x3 hallway with a ballista set up in front of the entry point and it didn't help at all when fired at point blank range.

I really don't think there's any way to not make those dwarves panic and either go axes-blazing or run like elves. Especially with the new discipline skill, it's going to be a little more complicated (and fun!) to train a proper military. Besides, they still try to attack anything dangerous even when you tell them to station at an important point, regardless.

discipline skill

I thought that skill was just for giggles, my dwarfs are fighters (with my strongest a GrandMaster) but got no back bone. Wiki says basic training gets it up but is there any other way to provoke small skirmishes from neighboring fortresses? I figure the badder the monster the more quickly they'll flee so tiny goblins and other such should raise the skill up faster seeing how it's actual combat.

I rarely get the random monster popping up and only been invaded by goblins twice dispite being in the Wilderness.

I wonder if anyone has done any Science with the discipline skill, seeing exactly how high a level is needed to deal with different threats...

I think the problem is its effectively random right now. I've seen reports of high disciplined dwarves running from things that theoretically shouldn't scare them.

FYI, the operator skill doesn't actually do anything

Second, don't waste your adamantine on bolts and that sort of ammo. It's far too light to make an effective ammo material.

Third, pretty much everything relating to morale is very bugged. The discipline skill seems to have some effect, but as you said, reports vary.

I understand that it is disappointing when a dwarf makes a spiked loincloth instead of an axe.

I had grandmaster discipline for a squad of ten dwarves decked out in leather and adamantine armor against a horde of goblins with adept discipline in the Arena. A lot of goblins ran in terror, and I think only about two of those dwarves ran away, as well.

Yeah, the discipline skill is buggy at the moment, but when it's ironed out, I think it's going to play a huge role in battles, from that point on.

That's changed in 0.40.05 btw. http://www.bay12forums.com/smf/index.php?topic=141364.0

Still probably not worth it for unarmored opponents though.
