Returning player, few questions please

I last played when vampires were just being added, and I was wondering what major additions/mechanics have been added to the game since then that I should learn/be aware of. Also any major bugs (I read that goblin sieges were currently bugged and not occurring often, leading to boring fortress sessions? is this accurate?)

Well, to start with, everything is wimpy currently. Rather so.

So sieges are a joke, and undead are really powerful (as they are about the only thing not affected by morale).

And trees constantly drop limbs, which are treated as cave-ins. Normal cavein mechanics apply, so they can and will drop through floors. In other words, don't dig right below the ground.

Is there any problem with just playing 34.11?

And there's nothing really earthshaking that I need to know about since the addition of vampires?

0.40 brought many exciting features. Most notably:
-multi tile trees - which means you get 3 to 4 times more wood than in earlier versions
-morale- soldiers might run away from combat and civilians get freaked out by corpses
-post gen history- world events like wars continue durning fortress and adventure mode

Build a grid of floor grates above the entire city. Draft a squadron of masons and bomb the crap out of the city with falling constructed walls.

Also, outpost liaisons and diplomats might get mugged on the way to the fort.

The undead are also a lot stronger because they no longer have hit points.  They're all like husks now.  Necromancer's zombies can also carry armour and weapons, a terrifying idea were there any.  On the bright side, they can be killed with magma and necro sieges are generally smaller.

Combat was overhauled.  Attacks are no longer instantaneous, multiple attacks can happen (hydras for example), and actual structural damage like pulping is a thing.  Giant sponges are killable now, and zombies can be permanently killed by pulping the head or upper body.

And most importantly of all, dwarves and others can climb walls and sacrifice themselves to the volcano god on a regular basis now.

Cats can climb trees and then get stuck, but honestly mostly its dwarves that do that.

0.40 was a pretty damn big update.
Bunch of new features, and many things were overhauled and modified.
