I've now got a healthy potato farm going!

Sadly, potatoes have to be grown from potato seeds, rather than from the tubers themselves, and they brew into potato wine rather than vodka. I can't imagine how awful potato wine must taste!

Dang it, how'd you manage that? I was hoping to make vodka for the bearded lard balls, and even got seeds from a caravan - but none of the above or underground plots allow me to grow them. Which season do you grow them and are they above, or underground plants?

Potatoes are above ground. I've successfully gathered them then grown them. The old bug where you can't grow seeds purchased from caravans unless you have some of the plants might still be in force - but if you buy potatoes from the caravan and brew the potatoes you should be able to then grow potatoes at a field.

They're aboveground, and should grow in any non-freezing biome according to the wiki/raws.

I think it's probably easiest to grow what you find around your fort. The only thing I've ever buried in the ground from the elf caravan is the elves!
