I vote they got the materials they needed by killing magma men, and used the obsidian from these magma men to build their workshops... Then carved a stone throne out of obsidian. They got the metal to make axes, steel thrones, and anvils by killingiron men then melting them down.

how did unarmed, unarmored dwarves accomplish such a feat, I hear you ask? simplicity itself, they mobbed the iron men and magma men with tens of thousands of dwarves.
