Local Map (known areas persistency)
« on: July 22, 2014, 12:25:12 pm »

new to DF & using DF2014, so please bear with me  :D

So I'm playng DF in adventure mode, and following happens:
a) I start in a fortress (the one where I lived all my life apparently)
b) I have "fun" exploring it and making the local map areas visible
c) eventually I decide to sleep
d) all my explored local map areas revert to unknown (black).

I assume this is by design... can someone confirm?

If so, this means that the maximum persistent level of detail is given by the maps accessible in Travel / Log, correct?

How is your character's memory stat? I think it has an effect.

Known issue, and it has nothing to do with your memory. This is a thing that happens with realized sites due to the way the game handles them - rather than load the entire site into memory and then save the whole thing to disk when you leave (which would be impractical for the large 17x17 towns), it generates the map from scratch each time you visit it and then applies whatever changes you've made to it in the meanwhile.

Note that Dwarven mountain halls (i.e. small fortresses, including the ones you make yourself) are not affected by this, which is why the game is so much slower whenever you are inside one.

P.S. If you don't get this note, let me know and I'll write you another.
It's amazing how dwarves can make a stack of bones completely waterproof and magmaproof.
It's amazing how they can make an entire floodgate out of the bones of 2 cats.

I see, thanks for the explanation.

I suppose that - bearing in mind how long the issue is known - I should recognize this as a "feature"... and just get used to it.
