I don't think you get an announcement if a noble gets their position by succession. Your civilization is probably dead so one of your dwarves was appointed as the monarch, being one of the few eligible for hat position.

Temperate climates are ones with a broad range of temperatures over the different seasons. It's not surprising you got snow if it is the winter or early spring / late autumn.

When there's no king/queen in your dwarven civ and the old one had no heirs, a new one gets randomly selected from the civilization's historical figures. If your civilization is completely dead and you make a new fortress (there might be a bug there), one of your dwarves becomes queen/king, because player fortress dwarves are historical figures and they're the only ones that currently exist.


As for the snow, temperate areas have this thing called "winter".

It's conceivable that the succession occurred during the two weeks that the game runs off the clock when you embark.  But I'm thinking it's more likely the dead-civ thing.
