Explodeing Giant Birds
« on: July 21, 2014, 12:38:12 am »

Version 0.40.04
Sorry for not putting this in the bug reports I can't make a forum there for some reason.

So I have just embarked and not five minutes go by before giant Thrips are "taking the full force of the impact?" from something on the treetops and exploding into a bloody mess of gore and viscera. You know it's a new version of Dwarf Fortress when birds are red misting for no reason above you! I gotta say it's making the initial aquifer breach more interesting.

It's also worth noting these are not trees I am chopping down, or interacting with in any way. Is anybody else seeing this kind of thing? Is it something to do with climbing physics?

This bug has already been reported on Mantis :).

Account signup there is wonky for some reason; I suggest sending a PM to Toady One on these forums to get your account set up.

Well if its related to what I've seen in other parts of the forum you birds have a serious case of... Bird Brain.

Basically they're flying into the trees and pulping themselves most likely.

Oh wow that's kinda cool actually. That the physics system is so effective that this is possible is fantastic.

I suspect broken physics rather than brilliant physics, but it's entertaining nonetheless.  It seems that birds, flying along, happen to bump into or otherwise approach trees, walls, or other solid objects, forget that they were flying, and plummet out of the sky.  The injuries are from hitting the ground, not the object they "hit".  Personally, I suspect that when creatures enter the space surrounding a climbable object, the game checks to see if you are still holding onto the object, and makes you fall if you are not, without first checking whether you are already flying.  Basically birds come close enough to the tree that the game decides they are actually climbing it, checks that, sees that they are not actually climbing, and promptly drops them, for glorious explosions and horrified fisherdwarves.

I've been chasing 2 barn owls around my map in a futile attempt to rid my map of them (they block all new wildlife spawns).
I've seen them flutter about many trees now, while they were fleeing from me.

It seems barn owls are immune to the falling down bug. They just won't splatter :(
