.40 Lethal - No Quarter
« on: July 17, 2014, 03:52:14 pm »

What's the difference between Lethal combat and No Quarter combat? Are people in no quarter mode more ruthless or something like that?
Also, if you know, what does it take to go to No quarter if you're at Lethal?

From the Future of the Fortress thread:
Lethal combat means swords have been drawn and the fight can result in serious injury or death, but surrender is an option. No quarter means no surrender.

It's amazing how dwarves can make a stack of bones completely waterproof and magmaproof.
It's amazing how they can make an entire floodgate out of the bones of 2 cats.

I may have to pay attention to that in the future, but in No Quarter combat, usually people run away after a few bruises, and give up...

EDIT: nevermind, I'm reading other messages after the one you linked, many things are asked there.

The phrase "no quarter" is an actual real-life military term, and it means "take no prisoners" - if you are No Quarter, then it means that you ignore all attempts to surrender made by your target.

According to Toady, No Quarter is only supposed to be used by other intelligent creatures once they realize that you have been faking surrender, by intruders with [ETHIC:KILL_*:REQUIRED] (according to target), and by wild animals (which don't understand the concept of surrendering anyways).

Note that this doesn't mean somebody in No Quarter cannot themselves surrender - it just means that they won't stop fighting if you try to surrender.

Thanks, this explains a lot. Still, I don't get why everybody immediately goes to No Quarter the instant i take out my weapon, but that's something else.

There are Bugs. Eventually, Toady will fix them.

I'm looking forward to this system getting fixed in particular. It's going to be great. So many games have tried to do this levels-of-combat things but it never comes off well.

Biting somebody is also capable of escalating the fight from non-lethal to lethal instantly.

Which I guess makes sense. Most things that draw blood can kill you one way or another.

I think its less a bug and more who are around when you do it. if their spouse is nearby they might decide to just kill you before things escalate further. If you attack a leader the ones that like that leader pop to no quarter like they should but some might just not care or switch to non lethal. Morale is broken as heck right now though. No quarter doesn't mean the enemy shouldn't run away though. It just means if you try to surrender they wont care.
