Any way to play in 1920x1200?
« on: August 25, 2006, 04:40:00 pm »

Is there any way to play in 1920x1200 (the native resolution for my Dell 24" LCD)?

Also, would it even be worth it?  (eg. would the characters look too small to be worthwhile?)

Go into

/Dwarf Fortress/data/init/init.txt

And edit the following:

[WINDOWEDX:1280]
[WINDOWEDY:600]

OR

[FULLSCREENX:800]
[FULLSCREENY:600]

Um, yeah, that no worky.

That is to say, it TRIES to work, but every resolution I've tried above 800x600 makes a horrible staticy mess of the game screen, and the only thing I can reliably do is quit.

Rollory, is that in windowed mode/fullscreen/both?  I can select larger windowed modes fine, and fullscreen modes according to the resolutions supported by my monitor.

In fullscreen mode, the title animation and intro movie are just black.  The main menu might have a few bars of color, but nothing else.  In windowed mode, the title animation and intro movie show, but in a very smeared fashion - you can tell what it should be if you know what to look for but aside from that it is a big mess.  The main menu has solid bars of color where text should be.  I get this for 1024x768 and 1280x1024; haven't tried any other resolutions yet.  I have a sceenshot of the windowed mode if you need it.  Any system info you need?

Btw I should add that changing windowed mode from 640x300 to 800x600 works just fine.

Those large sizes work for me.  I'm not sure where to start with a technical issue like this -- what are the specs on your graphics hardware?  I think some of the paging and other features of OpenGL store some large chunks in video memory that would depend on the size of the window.

Was it to a resolution you can normally set your screen to?  I don't think it will accept non-standard settings for fullscreen.

My graphics card says it's a Radeon x700.  I can set my desktop to all sorts of resolutions up to and including 1600x1200, which is actually what my desktop is set at right now.  Never had a problem with them before - I play Eve Online in 1280x1024 for instance.

edit - also, just did the driver update thing for the card; "could not find more recent driver than what is already installed".

Weird. I've got a 9800 myself; it works fine in 1200x360 windowed.
Have you tried 1900x570 windowed with the 800x600 font?

Ok, that was it.  I was trying to change the font entry as well as the resolution.  If I don't do that it works fine.  But of course it's kinda pointless then - the screen still only displays 800x600 tiles :-)  I was hoping to see most of the fortress at once.

Well, it does rescale the 800x600 tiles to fit properly in the 1900x570 window. But you're correct in that you don't get a wider field of view; regardless of the pixel resolution of the window, the tile resolution is clamped to 80x24.
There's been some talk about fixing this, but I don't think Toady has confirmed/denied; and it's not OSS so we can't just patch it. So in the meantime we pretty much have to wait and be content with 80x24  ;)

It seems that if you don't go with an exact multiple of 640x300 or 800x600, it has some rather ugly character stretching. I've tried pre-stretching the character map in photoshop to use a better algorithm, but then I get pink lines around everything due to blending pixels.

Anyway, it's definitely possible, but it would take a while of manually correcting each character's outline. If I get really bored later, I might make a larger resolution art file.
