Make elements of Background selectable individually
« on: July 16, 2014, 02:36:30 am »

Since there's three variables for the background of a new adventurer now, it can get kind of hard to get the exact combination of starting location, god and social status you want.
So I suggest making it possible to cycle through the values of all three individually and having a separate key for the way it currently works (i.e. pressing r -> random background).

A map that shows where the starting location is located on the world map would be great to have, too, but I figure that'd be significantly more work.
Just being able to cycle through the variables rather than through random combinations would already be a great help.

Edit: For completion's sake, I guess it'd be four variables with level of worship (i.e. normal/ardent/dubious etc).

I believe that the eventual plan is to stop generating adventurers altogether and allow you to play as different historical figures. Instead of creating a parentless, history-less demigod from thin air and recruiting Cacame as him, you can just begin as Cacame.

Toady has talked about making it possible to take over historical figures, but not as a complete replacement to being able to create a fresh character.
Either way, it seems like being able to take over historical figures is still quite some ways away, so this would be useful even if it was just a stop gap.
