Milestones: The Gods Achievement Hunting
« on: October 07, 2014, 12:51:32 pm »

In Greek myth, the god's were always drawn to the most beautiful, the best craftsman, the most soulful of musicians. They absconded with them, raged when they surpassed them, toyed with them and gathered them. In practically everything, the first was always given special reverence, and blessed. Prophecies often have strange, unlikely demands.

The very first, the best around, and on occasion the very unlikely things the RNG throws up should all be marked and meddled with by the game, whether through gods, ambient magic or simply commemoration and lionization by all who hear of them.

sir I just want to say that your post is a bit confusing to read. the first paragraph is fine it's just the second one. So let me see if I understood this. What you are saying is that the best craftsman in the world should be given special treatment by the game? How should they be treated differently?

An example might help.  There was once this beautiful Greek maiden, and her mother boasted that this maiden was more beautiful than Athena.  BAM!  Girl is cursed with superpowered ugliness.  In case you haven't guessed by now, the maiden's name was Medusa.

The Greek gods were portrayed as above humans, but not above human failings like pride and envy.  In fact, they seem downright insecure at times (like what they did to Prometheus for gifting Man with fire).

Then there's Daedalus, the greatest craftsman, kidnapped by King Midas. The Trojan war was down to arguing over which god was the fairest. To take christian mythology, we all remember the first man and woman and the first murderer. As for the prophecy thing, take the 7th son of a 7th son requirement for a wizard. Not too commonplace.

Do like, but Then Id also wonder if that would mean all the God's are:

a) real
b) distinct form one another (i.e. Jupiter isnt Zeus)
c) have rivalries with one another and contests?
d) of course, are subservient to Armok (to the point of him still being an abstract)
e) have interactions with mortals mundane creatures.

The idea of creatures who live by the standards of their god's receiving special boons or equipment in worldgen does stand to make adventure mode more interesting, so long as its not overdone.

Is Armok actually like a thing or is it just this thing that everyone likes to mention? Like I get that that's in the name, but the game never mentions him besides that.

He's the fan-made reason why the world gets recreated.  He's essentially the explanation why things are randomized.  I mean, sure the game has his name in the title, but I dont think Toady explicitly and formally admitted to him being in any way represented in the game.

And anvils :D

Anvils require an anvil to forge them upon.  So where did that anvil come from?

I believe Armok was an actual character is one of the earlier Bay12 games (allegedly named after the number-of-PC's-usable-arms-remaining status variable armOK), but is not an in-game thing for DF.

The lore brewed in the forum is that Armok is the one who forges all of the worlds generated by DF.  Therefore he is not in any of those worlds, but they are all touched by him.  Why the God of Blood would be forging things is a bit beyond me...

Quote from: Toady One regarding Slaves to Armok: God of Blood
"Armok, the God of Blood, is just about the only constant in these chaotic random universes. A general sense of conflict keeps Armok appeased - when the universe becomes too boring it is set on the anvil of creation to be reforged."

"The destruction of the world by Armok will arise inevitably in most game worlds. As civilizations spread and the frontier closes, the world will start to look homogeneous. Armok, looking upon this decadence in disgust, will reform the world. Basically, when the universe has become too boring, it will be changed."

Armok is the power that destroys and recreates the world whenever it becomes too peaceful.  On a meta level, Armok is the player, who will grow bored with the game once there is nothing left to fight against, and will therefore decide to generate a new world.

Given that, so far, all deities do is make more things for the civilized people of the world to fight against (vampires, werebeasts, necromancer slabs, and now raising demons), it stands to reason that they are subservient to, or aspects of, Armok himself.

And so it only makes even more sense to create conflict by having cults and all of that stuff.
