Author Topic: Are strikers (and wrestlers in general) the best millitary dwarves in DF2014?  (Read 1148 times)

So, as many have noticed, dwarves don't use their melee weapons all that much, either in training or in combat. Instead, they seem to do quite a bit of punching, kicking, biting, and throwing in that order.

The most prolific enemy in DF2014 seems to be undead that siege rather early due to the plentiful necromancer towers in DF2014 (which I think are a good thing). I tend to embark with 2 military dwarves to deal with early threats, and from what I've observed embarking with proficient strikers (with some shield and discipline skill) seems to be the best bet for actually killing necromancers/undead early on. Axe, Sword, and Hammer dwarves don't use their weapons often enough, and their punches and kicks are rather weak. Marksdwarves use their weapons, but bolts seem wholly ineffective at taking down undead. Dwarves with a decent striker skill, on the other hand, tend to start as and stay the most lethal dwarves in the fort, capable of dispatching undead relatively quickly.

Anyone have similar observations? Different observations? What do you think makes for the most effective military in DF2014?

My axedwarves are perfectly fine using their axes, and I have the dismembered corpses of a few zombies to prove it. Granted, they DO also like to grapple and punch the undeath out of zombies as well, so I think its ok. If they are skilled enough (and you best be using SKILLED dwarves now, unskilled or weakly skilled dwarves are cannon fodder now) they can hold their own against pretty much anything.

I would rather throw a punch than try to swing an axe at something right on top of me.
