Screenshots of the whole fortress
« on: August 25, 2006, 10:06:00 am »

Hey,

I see plenty of people taking screenshots of their whole fortress on the boards. I'm guessing it's a functionality inside the game but I can't find any information on taking screenshots. Could someone enlighten me?

Thanks  :)

Hit escape, select the "Export to BMP" (or similar) option, load the resulting massive file into your image editing program of choice and save as a gif, png, or jpg.

Except, don't save it as a .jpg because the compression will make it look bad.

Save it as a .png and it'll have as much compression as a .jpg but without any of the graphical information loss.

The world map's .bmp is somewhere around 20 megs, but compressing it to a .png reduces it to just 1 meg, and without graphical distortion!  :D

You can shrink it even farther than that. I've put a link below for Ken Silverman's pngout compression tool.

http://www.advsys.net/ken/util/pngout.exe

Example of compressing an image with 4-bit color:

code:
pngout /c3 /d4 image.bmp

*nods* Any good graphical editor should allow you to convert the image from RGBA to Indexed colour, so if you switch it to 16 colour or less you'll get sizes in the 500 KB range.  I like to shrink my maps by 50% without using interpolation, too, in order to get them down to about 120 KB as a PNG.

You know imageshack does allow images that are smaller then ~1.2 megs, right? Shrinking (basically reverse stretching) images results in severe distortion.

I do this in the interest of hard drive space, nothing else.  I, as yet, have never posted any of my maps (other than the full-size ones you can get off of the pregenerated worlds page). ;-)
