Changing save location of DF?
« on: July 10, 2014, 06:32:35 pm »

hello, I'm new here and i'm not sure if i put this in the right spot. Sorry if i didnt.

Anyways, today i made a case for dwarf fortress. i'm going to burn a copy of dwarf fortress onto a dvd
and make a cool disc copy for my shelf. now i know that i probably wont use my disc copy that much,
but I do want to make it seem super legitimate. my problem is is that saves can get pretty huge, and i'm
pretty sure you can only write to a disc so many times. is there a way to change the save location of
dwarf fortress? i was thinking of having a file generate some sort of symbolic link on the computer to where
the save folder is, but i'm having some trouble with that. does anyone know any other way? or is there some
option in df that i'm just missing making this entire thread make me look like an idiot?

i know that most of this seems kind of pointless, but i just want a cool dwarf fortress disc. i also thought it
would be kind of cool if like a friend came over and i just popped in the disc and it played on his laptop.

What the heck's a dvd? Is that one of those big black round things that play music when you scratch them with diamonds?

Not possible, since save locations are fixed and can't be changed. Also, the game alters other files as well, like gamelog.txt and errorlog.txt, so those files should be relocated as well to make the DVD to work.

You know, they could teach maths like this at school. "There are 105 dwarves in a settlement. A goblin invasion appears and 67 die. Then a migrant wave..."

Hard drives read and write faster than dvd's. Computers nowadays are more likely to have usb than optical drives, so just use a usb 3.0 thumbdrive. They are backwards compatible.

The save location is hard coded. No changing that.

If you want to make a DVD, make yourself an installer :)

Dwarven blood types are not A, B, AB, O but Ale, Wine, Beer, Rum, Whisky and so forth.
It's not an embark so much as seven dwarves having a simultaneous strange mood and going off to build an artifact fortress that menaces with spikes of awesome and hanging rings of death.
