So, barely finishing my first year of my new 40.03 fortress, I decided to appoint a broker (I like knowing how much money I have)
And I noticed this

My stonemason (who is very lazy, and suits a 'noble' title) was promoted to king. It has left me in an interesting position. After forgetting to keep my water supplies stocked for the winter, my fortress was already unstable, but now I have to serve a king who has (suddenly) high expectations. Interestingly, it produced no announcements, and no liaison came to inform the dwarf of his status. Perhaps in a time of no messages from the capital, an opportunistic dwarf grabbed a crown and dubbed himself king of the dwarves, master of stone and ruler of the mountainhomes.

Feature, almost definitely. The line of succession works now, aaaaand sometimes enough royalty is dead that one of your dwarves is the closest to the line.

Lielac likes adamantine, magnetite, marble, the color olive green, battle axes, cats for their aloofness, dragons for their terrible majesty, women for their beauty, and the Oxford comma for its disambiguating properties. When possible, she prefers to consume pear cider and nectarines. She absolutely detests kobolds.

Was your civ dead? Where there any blue sites on the map with civ list selected in embark mode? Since succession works now embarking with a dead civ will have one of your dwarves picked as monarch after a while.
Hmm now I wonder if it's random, or due to closest related bloodlines, or something else entirely. Maybe character traits?
