So, I just wrestled a stray duck to death and am trying to liberate it of it's delicious duck meat.

I have the duck corpse in my left hand, and a copper dagger in my right.
When I press x and try to use the 'butcher' option, nothing happens. Pressing enter or the left/right arrow keys does nothing.
Ditto for when either or both objects are on the ground in the same tile.

Could I be doing something wrong or is this a bug of some kind?

The duck could be too small to butcher. According to the wiki, the most you'll get out of a duck is one skull and no meat. So it's no big loss.

As I know, corpse should be on the floor to be butchered.

 You can butcher held corpses too. I agree with Trif;  it's probably too small.

Just kill the nearest sentient being for food, nobody will care.

But yes. My first food in the new DF was Dingoman meat. And boy, did it taste of victory!
