2014 Megabeasts
« on: July 10, 2014, 06:09:41 am »

So, I generated a world in the new version, pocket world up to 300 years with 50 megabeasts. I went to start and adventure, and the only option was a human outsider, so I went and checked the legends. Turns out that dragons wiped out most of the civilised world in the years 15-50. Are megabeasts just a lot more proactive now, or is it the size of the world that's getting everyone killed?

Size + The fact that all invasions are successful. Which means that of megabeasts too, I guess.
Also, I think that megabeasts reproduce a bit more easily now. Not sure.

The fact that all invasions are successful
Invasions are successful AFTER worldgen. And megabeasts don't attack settlements after worldgen.

you're lucky it wasn't an adventurer.  I've heard they can bash your skull in by throwing water at you.  UNDERWATER

Ah yes, forgot that. Sorry, I'm a bit tired now.
Still, invasions are still many 1v1 fights until someone gets a lucky shot and kills the megabeasts or his health gets chipped down. So megabeasts are still successful and if they really reproduce easier, well...

Though I'm surprised OP didn't encounter the sitesplosion that usually happens during worldgen now. I can see it in a 5yr old world I just genned...

Question: What exactly do invasion include ?

Does that mean if one goblin attacks site with 500 skilled humans, goblin wins ?

Theoretically, yes. In practice I don't think they attack much larger enemies.
Also, goblin attacks are generally lead by very powerful individuals.

Plus, the towns are probably retaken quite soon and the population can revolt. The population which is not really affected in numbers. Dunno if soldiers die in big numbers or just retreat. It might be worth a look into legends.

The reverse has been happening quite frequently for years - e.g. 500 skilled humans attack a site with one goblin, and the goblin wins. I had a worldgen in 0.34.11 in which one of the dwarven civs lost ~15,000 dwarves attacking a goblin site with a population under 500 - and killed only about 100 defenders for their trouble.

The only sitesplosions I've seen are the ridiculous numbers of towers that spring up everywhere. Most of the civilisations only seem to end up with two or three towns that get wiped out.

Thanks for the replies anyway, I guess I'll just have to use worlds that don't have hundreds of terrors from before evolution any more.

Well, I have an EXTREMELY hard time finding even a single tower. Most of the time there's like 2 on the whole map.
On the other hand, I see hillocks/fortresses/darkpits/forest retreats/towns/hamlets in the dozens (depending on history length, only 3-6 in a 5 yr world) all within 1 tile of the other.

I guess it's all down to personal luck and settings. (Though I've tried setting civ/site numbers lower and higher, didn't see a difference)
