There have also been many new DFHack improvements, might want to check those out.

I haven't played seriously since DF2010 was newish...

It's been over two years since the last update.

So, zero. The number of changes since you played last is zero.

There has been continuous development of many lovely mods though. Masterwork especially.
Masterwork isn't the kind of thing you recommend to people who go years without playing, man. It's the "I know DF too well so I need it to be more complicated now" mod. Not to mention the feel of the world differs a lot from vanilla, and a lot of the functionality is less than intelligible.

Also you should probably wait about a month. Then the new version will come out.

And the new version will be GLORIOUS
And riddled with a host of new bugs. You might want to make that two months.  ;)
Ah but the bugs are the best part! Finding out things like Dwarves and animals melting into puddles if it ever rains is some of the best part of having a new version! (Which was a real bug, at one point).

It would be brutally difficult and probably won't work. In other words, it's absolutely dwarven!

My god, I've not been back to DF since two years ago, and at that time, I was working on a major mod too, which I just let sit about until a few weeks ago. Just starting to come back to it as the new version is imminent is quite disorienting. Starting to learn the new plant raws, and even the little that is to see now is really fascinating.

Have a bit of fun now, but not too much because too much is bad, but bad is good when it's fun, and more fun will come very soon with the new version.

So I say wait a bit longer to have the new kind of bad that is good for you~
