Separate gamelogs
« on: July 08, 2014, 03:50:05 pm »

Right now everything goes to gamelog.txt, from announcements to combat reports or dialogues. This can be a mess if one wants to trace back one specific event, especially in Adventure mode where there are a LOT of dialogues.

I suggest there should be separate categories for events - it already kind of exists in game, but it should really be in the gamelog. For instance, combat logs could have a [COMBAT] tag before the log in gamelog.txt, or maybe there should be a combatlog.txt. That doesn't really matter as long as they're easily recognizable and filterable. Since the game already sort of recognizes types of events (combat/hunting/sparring) I thought it wouldn't require that much in the way of implementation.

Separating the conversation log and naught else would be enough for me. Timestamps would also be much appreciated as well. :D

Or perhaps have two columns with timestamps ordered on the left hand side? Separating these logs would be confusing without proper organization, as you wouldn't know what happened when.

Maybe a very terse (one or two character) tag and a timestamp, followed by a tab character, then the log entry.  That would be simple to filter.  I wouldn't like to see them moved to different files because that would make it virtually impossible to recreate the context of an event.

How about an init file option to set the name of the log file for each type of log, and if they're the same file then they're interleaved properly like Dirst prefers and if they're not then they're separate like the OP desires? [ETA:] And of course the option to just turn an type's external log off altogether, to complement the turn-off-announcement-type features already in the announcements init file.

For that matter, it'd be nice to have some kind of system for managing the size of the logs. Say, "create a new file every session" or "create a new file every x mb" or "create a new file the first session of each day". It could then leave it up to the player to delete old files -- but at least we could then do so without deleting *everything*.

I have an idea. Let's play a game where you win by being as quiet as possible.
I get it, it's one of those games where losing is fun!
