Using less-exploity, or perhaps I should just say "less cutthroat strategic" embark setups will not make much of a difference over the default embark.

However, you can bring some ridiculous things with you if you tetris those embark points just right and act semi-exploity. Things like coal and ores instead of tools, and stupid numbers of turkeys or geese, logs, getting free barrels by bringing 1 of each different cheap barrel items, distillable plants and a stonecrafter (quick rock pots) instead of booze, etc. 1280 or whatever it is points can last you easily like 5 years without barely having to actually gather any local resources if you do it right.
