Earth Defense Force is actually a video game about hoomans fighting giant ants. Its actually quite good. There's a new one (number 6 I believe?) coming out in February. Its insanely popular in Japan.

Games' a crossover of Super Dimensional Fortress Macross, Mobile Suit Gundam, Earth Defense Force, and XCOM. Originally having Star Ocean in there but then decided that was one too many.

The game doesn't actually pull any characters or canon or plot, just the stuff. So:
- SDFM's Super Dimensional Fortresses
- Gundam's Mobile Suits
- EDF's dauntless ground forces and insane weaponry
  - The general military also adopts EDF's overall attitude when it comes to xeno (shoot all)
  - and XCOM's zeal and determination as well as their mission to adapt xeno and xenotech to the needs of humanity clashes with this ideal, one that the entirety of humankind is ultra familiar with, and this forms the crux of the theme

In Book 1 starts as Earth comes under attack by xeno for the first time. They've been aware of this impending attack for some time and have done all they can to prepare for it, thus the EDF is christened. At this time humanity is not a spacefaring race, and only has the beginnings of a colony on the Moon and an outpost on Mars, both of which are wiped out by the scout wave of the aforementioned xeno invasion.
