how do i make my dwarves drop items they carry?

i have a menial labour/farming dwarf who picked up my +iron pick+ i just made. how do i make him drop it into a pile or something?

You can dump it after setting up a garbage dump site.
  (i)-select area-(g) for garbage dump site
  (v)-center over dwarf-(i), plus and minus down to the pick and (d) to set it for dumping.

  After it is dumped, it will lose the dump tag and gain the forbidden tag.  Unforbid it with (k)-plus and minus to select it-(f) to unforbid it.

You could also unassign his mining labor and get him to do another job.  He'll put the pick back eventually, and even faster if you assign him woodcutting and actually get him an axe and at least one tree is assigned to him.
