I've just analyzed a disassembly of 0.34.11, and the "was worried not to have adequate protection lately" is only generated in two places, both of which are linked to tax collection.

You're using a DFHack plugin/script which creates those thoughts for other purposes.

It's amazing how dwarves can make a stack of bones completely waterproof and magmaproof.
It's amazing how they can make an entire floodgate out of the bones of 2 cats.

Too bad the dwarves haven't invented the gas mask yet. Many dwarves would still be alive if that invention was invented.

I know this syndrome. I know it far too well.

An FB came, so I sent two marksdwarves to lure it out of the cavern pond. They died a dozen steps or so after being hit by the dust cloud. So did about 50 more dwarves. I ended up releasing the HFS just to kill it, effectively sacrificing half of the fort.

A detailed account of these events here.

Dwarves can "block the breath", which protects them somewhat from poisonous gas and vapours, but not dust, since it's technically a solid.

A densely cultivated Beard stuffed with charcoal ought to suffice...
