Gotta love the Corrosion Mod but gosh are the Undead overpowered XD

Never actually fought them myself. bad luck wipes my settlements out beforehand, usually anyone with a gun/ranged weapons.

They just tear arms off like they it is just a joke :P

I remember i once had two swordmasters that got slaughtered by three of them.....

Gosh that mod is hard but i am actually tempted to try it again XD

Metropolis Orbsdream,

We were sieges by 200 goblins earlier this year they came in full force with some if the most viscous creatures imaginable. The military attempted to attack them with our archers but even with fortifications they received counter-fire killing 1 dwarf and injuring 2i was forced to lock down the town (above ground) and hold off.

4 months later I was prepared to attack but then our worst nightmare occurred the goblins received reinforcements another 100ish goblins Orbsdream was no doubt going to fall even with the newly conscripted army of 75 archers (plus main army of 50)

However our wishes came true as a Elven Siege and Human Siege occurred within a 2 month notice a massive war occurred outside of our gates while my archers rained hell on all 3 armies. In the end all that was left was 6 Humans, 4 Elves and 190 dwarves after a small rain of arrows they retreated and he Mountainhome is now richer than ever.

Morale of the story: if you cannot win the siege consider waiting maybe a miracle will occur.

Results:
89 Humans dead
71 Elves dead
Over 200 Goblins dead
1 dwarf dead

Also food stocks and liquor stocks went down drastically and may cause future issues

Moutainhome, Orbsdream

Felsite, 18th 260

Over the course of the past two years the people of Orbsdream had been raiding Human and Elven Caravans with force killing all of the inhabitants and collecting the goods, After two years of this the Elven people of Disa Canene were fed up with the slaughtering of there people and sent out there armies to lay siege to Orbsdream.

THE ELVEN ARMY (THIS WAS WHEN THE FIGHTING STARTED THERE WAS EASILY 400

The Elven Army slowly surrounded the fortress armed with War Bears and Giant Dingo's they slowly approached the entrance to the fortress, They were finally caught when they were entering the entrance to our capital, the first wave was 9 grizzly bears and 10 bobcat animal men/women. They attacked our guard dogs while our archers got into positions and when our Military Commander recruited a backup militia.

The first wave of 50 elves charged through the guard dogs but received heavy casualties and were immediately stopped by the onslaught of arrows, when the second wave arrived of easily 100+ elves the entire army was ordered to charge with the marksdwarves providing cover, they managed to push them out into the open field where the 2nd wave combined with the 3rd forcing the Dwarven Army of 60 (Only 20 heavily skilled soldiers) to fight easily over 200 enemies the dwarves fought neck and neck against the elven warriors many dwarves lost there lives that day...... but more Elves lost theirs.

Results
400 Elven Warriors/Animals dead
17 brave dwarves dead

Elf attacks can be really nasty, the giant horrible beasties they ride on can really make up for their terrible wooden equipment. I recently had to deal with a bunch of elven ambushes that involved quite a few flying mounts, luckily without any ranged units on them, but even after what appeared to be most of the ambushes had been slain, swordselves were just hovering around the place and scaring off my dwarves when they tried to do anything outside. I wound up having to send military units all over the place chasing them down (and discovering another hidden group of elves in the process). It was long and bloody (mostly elf blood) but the fort pulled through.

Haven't faced any large invasions yet (only 3rd year in) but with my rising economy based on gold and silver crafts, bone crossbows, maces, and war hammers (it seems my civ is in high demands for weapons, almost as if preparing for a war), I'm sure to be invaded soon. I developed a pretty neat military build up so far. I have three squads, HIGHCOM being where my militia commander and heavier infantry is positioned. The First Knights, where I have a lighter spear/short sword regiment, and The Second Knights, where I have marksdwarves and light infantry for support. Planning on adding a fourth squad when my population reaches 90-100, having their barracks between the two cavern systems in my fort, and naming them DEEPCOM. So far, the line-up has worked out pretty well, taking out a variety of threats (petty fish people to troll infestations). I'll try to post as soon as I face an invasion!

I have been playing with the Fortress Defence Mod in place and was besieged a little while ago by War Elephants. In case you don't know, these are elephants armoured in iron and steel and armed with iron and steel mauls and morningstars. I ordered all of my dwarves inside, opened the secondary gate which is a long corridor two spaces wide with a large array of weapon traps at the start, and an open ceiling above where marksdwarves rain bolts down upon them, before they reach a fighting pit (also accessible to marksdwarves two levels above) filled with war grizzlies, lions, and wolves. Beyond that, there's a second fallback area with even more animals, marksdwarves, and melee dwarves.

Anyway, so these War Elephants showed up and I activated my alerts, safely evacuating everyone inside and getting all of my military to their positions...all except one. A lone hammerdwarf who had been on patrol had trouble understanding that he was supposed to run the gauntlet with the elephants behind him, leading them to get slaughtered, and couldn't find the easily accessible trapped entrance if his life depended on it, which it did. A squad of the elephants, led by a Champion, find him. There's about 11 of these guys. In true dwarf fashion, he utters a fearsome battle cry and raises his trusty exceptional steel war hammer and masterwork steel shield, and charges the elephants in his full raiment of steel armour.

He then proceeds to slaughter their champion and four other elephants, breaking his lower left arm in the process but refusing to give up his hammer or the fight until the rest of his squad arrives and assists in finishing the job. He killed five war elephants with a broken weapon arm and kept on fighting! I immediately nicknamed him Elephant Slayer and started work on a very nice room for him.

By the end of the fight he was a master is practically every skill with two broken legs. (Yes, he killed goblins while his legs were broken.)

If you piss off elves, don't just atom smash their mostly-useless wooden weapons! Instead, you can construct weapon traps filled with wooden weapons. They're unlikely to kill anything remotely dangerous, but they can proc a lot of potential dodges from invaders, which can be used to force said invaders to fling themselves into an adjacent pit from dodging out of the weapon trap. What's this mean for you? Well, if you like, you can set up a bunch of weapon traps in front of your fortress and have invaders injure themselves on said traps, while also having a nearby pit for invaders to potentially fling themselves into. Theoretically, you could have pit-and-trap assortments arranged in such a way that all the pits will dump into a large shooting gallery for you to train your marksdwarfs, no cages needed! can also double as an arena if you build a way to release things into it for your invaders to fight.

While not the most useful military advice out there, I've been working on this strategy for fort defense and it's been going pretty well (though I have been using a mix of actually dangerous weapon traps and the wooden weapon traps, mostly so that I don't have to rely on enemies dodging into pits.) It does, however, feel very dwarfy to me to kill or grievously wound invaders by making them dodge into empty space, impacting the cold, hard stone with great force several z levels down. Doubly so due to using a mostly useless resource for it, with added bonus of sometimes killing even more elves with this method.

I use a very similiar set up. Mine is a trapped catwalk with retracting bridges on each side which is overlooked by archer batteries about 6 floors above the multipurpose arena and shooting gallery the dodge pit ends in. It provides lots of live fire training without the hassle of cages. The only real difference from your set up is I don't kill the elves so my weapon traps are filled with wooden spiked balls and misc. trash  goblinite.

I have a forked entrance so I can funnel invaders past our pet dragon rather than the dodge pit/arena if I am tired of picking up all the troll fur loincloths and such. These days the military is so insanely well trained and geared that I usually just kill the sieges out on the front lawn rather than letting them get inside since invariably there is always some straggling herbalist or fisherdwarf that needs rescuing out there anyway. I might reprise this decision after the last siege involving squads of goblin archers where two of my dwarves actually sustained injuries which of course got infected... Grrrr, infected nails, the deadly scourge of legendary melee dwarves.
