Should I buy a new PS2 for this?
« on: August 11, 2014, 06:59:25 pm »

My Playstation is anorexic.

Back when I was little, I got a PS2 for ma birthday.  I was happy. To this day it is my favorite gaming system of All Time.

The first one we had was a "fat" model, since it was before the slimline was released. We got the earliest model PS2 there was, which unfortunately experienced problems with the laser after long periods of time. Our console ended up being one of them, and it ended up breaking. We gave it to my grandfather so he could do geek stuff with it, and bought a new, slimline PS2. This slimline PS2 is the same one that I use today.

If you stalk me a lot, you know that I recently installed a software exploit on this PS2. I did it so that I could run burnt backups of games, as well as homebrew programs like emulators.

The other day, I learned that the fat models of PS2 had expansion bays on the back. Some games like SOCOM and Final Fatasy use hard drives for saving, but that isn't what I want it for. If you have the tools and resourcefulness to haxx your PS2, which I obviously do, hard drives can also be used to store pretty much any game, so you don't even need to insert the disk. Emulators and other programs can also be stored here, for better performance than when they are being used from USB.

The idea appeals to me, but the slim PS2 doesn't have an expansion bay to put a hard drive in. The good part is, a lot of time has passed since the PS2 came out. I managed to find huge numbers of working, fat PS2s on eBay, all for only about 50 US dollars each, which is perfect for me right now. Using HDDs also requires a network adaptor for a reason which I do not know, but they are very cheap. I already have a spare hard drive laying around which I know would work.

However, doing this would also mean that I would have my old faithful PS2 probably stowed away somewhere, and while it seems like a good idea now, I don't want to end up feeling dumb later because I spent 50 dollars on something stupid without knowing.

So I ask you, is it worth it, or is it stupid? Opinions, plz

Sounds like a good idea to me.

Then again, I often put reason in front of sentimental value when it comes to other people, so take my opinion with some salt. Maybe a pinch of pepper. Perhaps a little paprika?

Also,
Final Fatasy
I cannot get the implications of this out of my head.

If it's something you're going to put to good use then I can't see the harm. You could always mount your Old Faithful on a wall or pass it on to a new, loving owner.

It not only works very well, but the most popular software supports virtual memory cards, meaning you no longer need to keep track of what card has what save on it, or delete old saves to make room. The PS2 reqires the network adapter for a hard drive because the HDD connector is on the network adapter.

As an alternative, the same software supports loading backups from your computer over the network. It's a major PITA to get working, but is a viable alternative.

Wouldnt it be simpler to just emulate the games on your PC?

Not really, since that option comes with extreme lag as well as numerous glitches. At least that's what happens to me when I try it.

EDIT: I've already got the new PS2, so I dismantled my old computer and am currently using the hard drive to do stuffs. I can confirm that homebrew and installed games work very well, so g'bye thread.

Oh yeah my dad rigged up my PS2 like that years ago. Twas pretty cool to have back in the days when renting games was a thing. I say go for it. Though the one I had required the gamedisc in order to copy it.
