Vampire Weirdness
« on: May 29, 2014, 04:11:04 pm »

Okay, I don't get it.

I identified a vampire in my fortress. He sucked someone dry, then I convicted him of the crime, and the sheriff locked him away for 200 days. (Yes, he meekly complied and served his time.)

After his release, I kept an eye on him. He went back to rejoin his squad, because he's in the military. After a few idle moments in the barracks, he went down to the bedrooms and found a sleeping dwarf. His victim just happened to be my fortress leader, which is kind of awesome, but whatever.

Here's the thing: I stationed the rest of my military down there to keep an eye on him. They watched him suck their fortress leader dry, and did NOTHING.

When the vampire was finished, he left. The haulers came and removed their dead leader's clothing from his body and tossed it into the finished goods stockpile.

My leader is still classified as "Missing."

A new leader already been appointed.

What in the world is going on here?

I have so far executed three dwarves by means of impalement ... for bringing cats into my fortress.

Witnessed crimes are not immediately added to the list; the dwarf has to take and complete the "Report Crime" task. Try putting your military off-duty, though its possible they're not going to report it.

Fucking hell man, you aren't just getting the short end of the stick, you're being beaten with it.

Is your plan really to flush water into hell, and have the CARP marines fight them without threat of flame or disease?  If so, you are awesome, and one of the greatest DF military visionaries I've seen yet ( not that I've seen that many, or any, for that matter )

Being a criminal, even a murderer, does not make you an enemy of the fortress.  That is why the military did nothing.  As NCommander mentioned, the only fallout would be the crime being witnessed and the vampire going back to jail again.

I will run the experiment to completion anyway, however. Even if the only reason why there is a punctured equilibrium in the fortress is because I have been brutally butchering babies
EDIT: I just remembered that dwarves can't equip halberds. That might explain why the squads that use them always die.

Why haven't you put him on lever duty yet, or better I hear there are crossbow vamps now.

Goblin: General? We were told by the Dark lord to kill the dwarves, so why are we throwing socks in the pond instead of attacking them?

My vampire once sucked a captain of the guard in front of many dwarves. When finished, he casually grabbed the corpse and buried the captain himself.

The point is, vampires aren't just evil, they are jerks.

Whenever I find a vampire I immediately wall them off in a separate area, enable all jobs and let them make trade goods (plus whatever they need to stay happy). Chutes in the ceiling and floor for raw materials and goods.
