You link the feeder stockpile to the fed stockpile and set the fed stockpile to take from links only. If you set it up right you will see dwarves move to the feeder stockpile ate random as always but from there you are more likely to see a single dwarf grab a bin and use it to gather the appropriate items in one swoop.

wa-hah?  I didnt even know that was a thing now.  I've barely played this version since it was released, and just getting back into it now.  Constantly amazed by little things like this.

I always set up my plant and seed stockpiles like that, it cuts down on the cancel job spam.

You can also use it to now make game-sanctioned, item type-specific, no-micromanaging quantum stockpiles

By making one stockpile, then a 2 tile minecart route that draws from it and dumps into a single tile stockpile that only takes from links and holds the same type of thing. Bing bang boom, your dwarves will haul all the things there, load the cart, and dump them all into a single tile where they will remain until needed.  I usually build 2 stone ones (magma safe and not areas), a wood one, and one for ores and bars (and armor and stuff if I have no distinct barracks) in the forges.

If you assign wheelbarrows to the first stockpile, they'll even use those to scurry aroudn and auto-clean up all the boulders from new rooms almost as quickly as you can dig them without you doing anything. It's great.

Dwarf fortress in 50 words: You start with seven alcoholic, manic-depressive dwarves. You build a fortress in the wilderness where EVERYTHING tries to kill you, including your own dwarves. Usually, your chief imports are immigrants, beer, and optimism. Your chief exports are misery, limestone violins, forest fires, elf tallow soap, and carved kitten bone.

I knew about minecart quantum piles, but this is a pretty great take on it.

I like to make specific-stone-type (or wood, or ore...) stockpiles for individual workshops.  I can imagine VAST improvements by doing it this way instead.
