The game is simple. The people demand ale, and you must provide. Ah, but beer is not free, and simplicity seldom lasts long in the presence of people.
Welcome to the world of Factorio.
You will choose one of four organizations and work with and compete against your fellow players to satiate the thirst of the people. These four jobs are at:
The Factory - The titular factory, you and your fellows receive requests to make booze, spend some time doing so, and then it gets picked up from your factory to be brought to its next destination, the Company. Be warned, though! Each order left unfulfilled will cost you money each week until it is, and each extra unit of ale produced but stuck filling space on your shelves will cost money to maintain!
The Company - Your job is that of a middleman and marketeer. People don't just want ale - they want YOUR ale. Or that's what you understand to be the case. You accept orders from the Caraveneers and send those orders on to your factories. Then you take the beer from the factories, bring them your distribution center, stamp them with your mark, and send them on to the Caravaneers. Like the factory, it costs you money to have standing unfilled obligations and to store additional goods.
The Caravaneers - You manage the trade routes between the cities, and its your job to get the Ale from the place it is produced to the place it needs to end up. Most of your business comes from a single, extremely popular client you refer to internally as simply The Tavern. You receive orders from the Tavern and place them with the Company, then see transport of the Ale from its source to its destination. Backlogged orders and overstocked inventory are both serious problems when you are trying to manage a successful trade route.
The Tavern - You deal with the actual thirst patrons and their insatiable demand for Company Ale. The ale is purchased from the Caravaneers since the ale your customers demand has to be imported. You get to see exactly what their demands are at all times, though, working on the front line as you do, and running a lean business by meeting that demand exactly is the key to staying on top. Serving as a storeroom for beer to warm, or having to tell thirsty customers your taps are empty, are both watching money walk out the door.
So how do I play?
Simply post which job you want to work. The number of people working for each organization should be roughly the same - you can't join an organization that already has more employees than any other, until those less popular organizations fill up.
When you choose, also pick a color - Red or Blue. If there is enough interest (4 or more players) in an org, it will split, creating competition.
Finally, note that the world is a bigplace, and travel and communication are slow. Deliveries and Orders both arrive on the turn after the turn after you place them - so expect at least a two turn delay before your seller gets your order, and another two turns before they deliver it. You will receive stock to start with, so don't worry too much about immediate backlogs.
