Various Troubles
« on: May 10, 2014, 01:52:11 pm »

Um, hi, everyone. Lately, I've been having a lot of problems. It's the end of the school year, and I got a letter home informing me of my 61 in English and my 41 in Social Studies, and for this, my parents refuse to allow me use of the computer as a result, which is odd, as they have good as told me that it's mine. (I'm typing this on my school-supplied Kindle Fire.) I got all angsty and ticked at my parents afterward, and my mom is just being an absolute jerk, yelling at the slightest provocation over my grades (mostly coming as a result of homework not-doings).

I... I'm not sure where I'm going with this statement, but I need a little advice on dealing with parents who have no clue what my life is actually like (they seem to assume all teenager-hood is like their own.) I also need advice on an addiction to not doing homework.

Pro tip #1: Nothing you do scholastically in high school will make any difference whatsoever for the rest of your life. Meeting people, learning to be likable and making friends and contacts that you keep afterwards is way more important than grades or homework.

Pro tip #2: You will never convince your parents of #1 above. Don't even try. Listen to them. Don't get angry. Be polite. Make them feel like you value them and appreciate their opinion and that they want what's best for you.  Accept that they are who they are and that they'll still be your parents 50 years from now after you've long since stopped caring about the problems your having now. Then do what you're going to do whether or nor it's what they want you to do. This is your life. You're the one who has to live it, not them.

Pro tip #3: After you leave high school there will be people who are much greater jerks than your parents. Sometimes those people will be in positions to decide whether or not you get a paycheck. Learn to deal with angry/frustrating/difficult people now. Your parents probably actually care about you. Very often the people deciding whether or not you receive a paycheck won't care about you one tiny bit. Your parents are good practice for real life.

Pro tip #4: This is bay12. In short order there will probably be a bunch of people making oh-so-helpful posts like "just do it" and "just make yourself do it" and "try listening to music to help you focus" and any number of other completely worthless pieces of advice. Ignore those people. They're not helping you.

Find something in life that you care about. Something that inspires you. Doesn't matter what it is. Surfing. Programming. Sex. Traveling the world. Running. Saving the whales. Chess. Singing in a garage band. Anything, just so long as it really genuinely drives you.

Find what that thing is, and do it. That's more important than homework.

Thanks for the advice.

I think I'm going to lock the topic now.
