What's a broodling?

A trader has a broodling cage for sale. I looked this up, and I found this: http://www.bay12forums.com/smf/index.php?topic=127707.325;wap2

Broodlings are baby birds, right? I'm confused, because it seems like they're baby birds that can somehow breed, and the baby-babies change species and turn into dorfs. Waaaaat I'm so confused.

Please someone clarify before I throw a tantrum and go stark raving mad.

You might have better luck finding answers if you move this thread to the Masterwork-specific subforum, which is itself a subforum of the modding subforum, because subforum.
