Yu-Gi-Oh Forum Duels!
« on: April 09, 2014, 01:07:20 pm »

The Duels themselves will be conducted via PM using random number gens or something. Or OCTGN maybe. Or something. However, this is for the discussion of that. Also, it's for using fan-made cards too. ( Also, you have to use images. You can use this to make them: http://www.yugiohcardmaker.net/ ) However, at least five people have to approve non-canon cards and the only fan-made cards that can be used are those that have been approved here. The judging of the cards will be based on quality and fairness. Also, I don't want any fights, and no strong nonsense. ( Fun is good, some insanity is ok, don't be a troll. ) I look forward to the fun that I hope this will be. I will lock this thread if it gets too crazy, and please keep discussion on topic as there are other threads for other stuff. As soon as I produce some card images, I'll display my five cards. I had designed them earlier and just now found them again, which is what prompted this thread.

I actually used to do this quite a bit on another board with Yu-Gi-Oh, and others did it with Magic: the Gathering.  We never did it by PM, though; we just used spoilers and the honour system, which let other people watch as well.  Oh, it was also text-only; images take up quite a bit of real-estate.  So I suppose that other than playing children's card games by post, it wasn't really the same, but the principle stands. :P

I'll probably just watch for the time being, though.  I haven't played since 2012.

EDIT: Hee~.  Inspired by you, I just took a look, and I even still have all my old files: deck lists, templates, character sheets, and cookie-cutter deck starter. :3

Mmm.... Alright. That sounds better anyway, but at very least I'd like to see a few card images. So maybe have two separate threads, one for images and card authorization and this thread for duels under spoiler tags. Tell me more about how you used to do it so I know what rules to use.

Hmmm...I went looking to see if I could post links to a couple examples, but it seems to have been a bit too long ago.  Basically, we used the following template as a baseline for each post.
...
Ah, we can't nest spoiler tags here to compactify everything, and the table tags work a bit differently, so I'll just strip those out.  OK, the template at the bottom of this post is probably a good starting point for what we used, with some tweaks.  Public information was put out where it could be easily seen (Card counts, face-up cards) unless it was too long (Graveyard, RFP), and private information (facedowns, hand, deck contents) kept hidden.  We included card fields and numbered the cards on the field because that was occasionally actually important to certain cards (Blasting Fuse, for instance), as well as for identification when blind-shooting facedowns where there were multiple options.  Some people linked their cards to the wiki so that effects could be found more easily, some didn't; that was another optional thing.  Some people included information like type/attribute/attack/defense/level, others didn't; that was also something that varied from person to person, though most people did at least include the basics.

At the start of a match, both players roll a die for initiative (1d20 was what we used because of D&D, but 1d6 seems to be the norm for games here; either will work), along with five-six dice for their starting draws (based on how many cards were in their deck, so 5d40 would cover a 40 card deck, with a few extra rolls in case of duplicates).  From there, we'd basically play it out like a card game, updating various fields each turn based on what we drew (using a 1d-whatever- at the start of the round, for however many cards were left in the deck).  The important thing is that, during complex turns, sometimes we'd typically stop at various points to ask if there would be a chained response (such as on summon or on attack) - that's especially true when we were trying to bait a particular response.  Oh, occasionally, if the turn player was going to activate an effect on chain to a mandatory event (for instance, when the next player draws at the start of their turn), it would also be put in a spoiler that they could open when they triggered that effect.

Oh wow. How did I miss this?

Umm yeah. If you still want to play we can do it your way Culise. I only skimmed what you wrote, but it seems feasible.

And right after I started watching The Abridged Series. I'm game.

It's been approximately forever since I've played Yu-Gi-Oh, so I'll just copy draw inspiration from a deck on the wiki.
